Until the fall of her home country’s repressive communist regime in 1989, the Romanian artist Geta Brătescu worked in secrecy for many years. Facing the constraints imposed by the political situation, Brătescu chose to focus on her own body as the subject of her artistic practice. Alone in her studio, she staged performances that she then documented on film or in photographs. Her hands in particular played a special role as an artistic material and medium. This is evident in the film 2 × 5, realised in collaboration with cinematographer Alexandru Solomon. With playful curiosity, the artist explores the expressive potential of her aging hands.
