The series of ten video stills Remake of the Weekend are excerpts from Rist’s eponymous video installation, created that same year. The series was presented, together with other works, at the Hamburger Bahnhof in 1998 in the context of the artist’s one-year DAAD residency in Berlin in 1996. The video installation refers to Jean Luc Godard’s 1967 film The Weekend, but, contrary to what the title suggests, Rist’s adaptation is not a remake of Godard’s dark comedy. Rather, Rist was inspired by the enigmatic mood of the road movie, situated between dream and reality.
