Tom Sachs

* 1966

Tom Sachs was born in New York City in 1966. He first studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London before continuing his studies at Bennington College in Vermont.
After finishing his degree, the artist returned to his hometown of New York, where he temporarily worked as a window dresser for the department store Barney’s. His artistic practice is to this day shaped by brand and consumer culture. His typical works – for example the exact replicas of objects made with either luxury packaging or everyday materials – pair a fascination with the persuasive power of consumer objects with a sharp critique of their ubiquity.
Tom Sachs’ works have been presented in multiple solo exhibitions in international museums, including Fondazione Prada in Milan and the Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst in Oslo. In popular culture, Sachs is known for his collaboration with the clothing brand Nike, for whom he designs a series of sneakers.
