Eight

The film Eight, by artist duo Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler, explores the motif of shattered dreams. The focus is on a young girl who looks out of a window onto the remains of her festive birthday party, which has been ruined by rain. Defiant, she runs out to cut herself a piece of the rain-drenched birthday cake. Home is portrayed as a sheltered place that has spared the girl greater disappointments until now. The film’s title not only refers to the child’s age (8), but also to the infinite quality of the loop (∞). Using virtually no edits, the artists combine two of the day’s events without their resulting in a compulsory sequence. Eight explores not only unfulfilled expectations, but also hopes of a better future.
