With the Rear Screen Projections series (1980), Sherman first switched from black-and-white to color photography and to much larger image formats. Simultaneously, she continued her intense preoccupation with the cinema. Rear Screen Projections refers to the cinematographic technique of background projection. While the figures of the Untitled Film Stills still seem to be embedded in the film scenes, this series uncovers the construction mechanisms of such images. The result is a complex puzzle composed of the layers between the film image and the photograph, the viewer, the actor and the story.
