Byrek

Anri Sala’s work Byrek is a tribute to his grandmother. He portrays her, or her hands, as she prepares a traditional savory beef-stuffed pastry puff in which a good luck coin is hidden during the holidays, bringing good fortune to the person who finds it. Sala remembers how he used to watch his grandmother preparing this dish as a child and tells of this tradition with a certain sadness for times past. His work is also an attempt to perpetuate a cherished tradition and the people associated with it. The film is projected onto a paper screen, onto which the grandmother’s handwritten recipe has been reprinted.
