Rodney Graham’s series Sunshine Superman (2001) refers to a song of the same name by British musician Donovan (born 1946) from the year 1966. Donovan is considered a key figure in the “psychedelic rock genre” and an icon of the hippie generation. Graham’s series consists of nine black-and-white prints, each showing a portrait of Donovan in a slightly altered form. The work can be read as an homage to the musician and his era, merging Graham’s conceptual rigor with his characteristic humorous undertone. At the same time, the series reflects Graham’s interest in linking pop culture, music, and art history.
