Pawlikowski

Frank Stürmer’s installation Untitled (Zwosta, Bucuresti Dog, Pawlikowski) consists of three parts. The middle projection shows Mrs. Zwosta, a pianist and former neighbor of the artist. _The elderly woman is playing an improvisation and during her play ones seems to be able to read in her face. During the World War II bombing of Berlin, Mrs. Zwosta remained in her apartment, playing the piano, in an act of solidarity with the older Jewish women in her building, who were not allowed into the air-raid shelter. The artist, born in Bucharest, left Romania as a child; he repeatedly explores the idea of home in his works. Various aspects of this subject connect the work’s three parts. The photo of his great-grandfather (Pawlikowski) exemplifies the family as a place of belonging, the Bucharest street dog (Bucuresti Dog) the absence of a place of refuge.
