Rodney Graham’s installation Mannitol from Heaven (2008) can be understood as an homage to French modernist author Raymond Roussel (1877–1933). Consisting of a framed text, two buckets of mannitol powder, and a typewriter covered in white powder and standing on a mirror, the installation is a nod to Roussel's work. When Roussel took his own life in 1933, two empty sleeping pill containers were found alongside an entire cabinet of prescriptions and drugs. The text that Graham typed on the typewriter lists all the substances that the author used. Among them is mannitol, which is employed both to cut drugs and, potentially, as an explosive.
