After a phase of using color to excess, Imi Knoebel returned to the black-and-white color spectrum at the beginning of the 2010s. This style had characterized his early artworks. At that time, Knoebel was striving for maximum reduction in his visual language, drawing on the work of the Russian painter Kazimir Malevich (s. Russische Wand, 1988). The Weiss Schwarz series includes aluminum paintings depicting pyramids, crosses, and other geometric figures, as well as compositions of aluminum strips layered on top of each other.
