Rot-Weiss I

Imi Knoebel’s portfolio of Rot-Weiss works on drawing cardboard was put together shortly after the group of works of the same name consisting of 32 acrylic paintings on wood. These have the same form and color scheme as the drawing cardboard series, consisting of five rectangular fields in white and red, arranged horizontallyand vertically. In each case, Knoebel varies the width of the fields and the combination of colors, always arranging the pictorial elements differently. This gives the overall composition its own dynamic quality. The work exemplifies Knoebel’s reduced, geometric and rationalist aesthetic and highlights the creative options offered by his non-objective visual language.
