Since the 1990s, Imi Knoebel has been working intensively with aluminum as an image carrier. He initially used aluminum plates and profiles as autonomous painting surfaces layering them on top of each other to create relief-like works. From the 2010s onwards, colored strips in a strictly geometric arrangement gave way to works characterized by a freer, almost biomorphic formal language.
In his recent series Etcetera, the artist continues this more dynamic and intuitive approach to color and form. This results in paintings on aluminum that captivate with their playfulness and spontaneity and are partly reminiscent of Knoebel's gestural-expressive works of the 1980s.
