The title of this series refers specifically to the US film actress Grace Kelly (1929–1982), who became Princess of Monaco in 1956 after marrying Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Throughout her life, she was considered the epitome of enduring beauty, cool clarity and enchanting aloofness. Imi Knoebel’s series of paintings reflects these qualities by exhibiting an austere yet vibrant aesthetic quality. Each work consists of five monochrome color fields, with four narrow strips encircling a central, wide box. The five-part composition resembles a stylized human face, so that Knoebel’s Grace Kelly paintings become a kind of portrait series, the change in the color combination breaking through the repetition of the formal scheme in the series and lending each picture its own individual character.
We can see a similar composition in the later Anima Mundi series.
