In the early 1970s, Imi Knoebel worked on series of pencil drawings in A4 format, which are distinguished by their spontaneous calligraphic lines. Colored ink was also added in some series. It is easy to trace the rapid, gestural movement of the pencil, and discern the process used to create the drawings. In these drawings, the line is a purely formal design element without a decorative function or symbolic meaning. In this series, Imi Knoebel translates the formal results of his Projektionen into the medium of drawing. To an extent, both series were created in parallel, and they provided the basis for the development of the artist’s non-objective vocabulary of forms.
