The End of Summer consists of a table and two chairs, which are completely covered with stuffed knitted work gloves. These objects protrude from the seats of the chairs and the table top and seem to reach out towards the viewers like greedy hands. Enthroned in the middle of the table is an assemblage of everyday objects made of plastic, including two baskets filled with fruit and vegetables, the opulence of which is reminiscent of a baroque centerpiece. The installation space is completely painted in red and white, so that the boundaries between the individual objects seem to dissolve.
Kusama used gloves for the first time in 1962 in her work My Flower Bed, in which she also had herself photographed. In her art, the gloves symbolize the desire for contact and to be touched, but also the fear of this.
